A striking 19th century French carved wooden torchère, with wonderfully exaggerated proportions and a beautifully timeworn painted surface.
The tall, architectural form is richly carved throughout, with scrolling foliate detail, acanthus-inspired ornament and deeply moulded sections running from the substantial base through to the upper candle platform. The whole piece retains layers of old cream paint, now naturally worn and rubbed back in areas to reveal traces of the timber and earlier decorative finish beneath.
