A wonderfully decorative late 18th century French architectural candle stand, retaining its original painted faux-marble decoration with beautifully aged gilt detailing.
The tall, sculptural form features an elegant shaped body with carved and gilded scrollwork, rising to a stepped top which has been sympathetically adapted to hold sice taper candles. The combination of softly worn pink, grey and cream faux marble with flashes of timeworn gilding gives the piece an incredible depth and patina.
Originally an architectural or ecclesiastical decorative element, it now works brilliantly as a statement candle stand, pedestal or purely sculptural object. Its generous scale makes it particularly striking placed against a simple wall or incorporated into a contemporary interior, where the age and texture really come into their own.
Dating to the late 18th century, the surface remains wonderfully untouched, with losses, rubbing, cracking and historic wear throughout — all part of the character we love and entirely consistent with its age.
A completely unique piece of French decorative history and a real focal point for an interior.
